Frequent Flyer Basics
Frequent flyer credit cards typically have a high level of interest and are best used by people that spend a decent amount of money on their credit cards and pay off their balance in full each month. Most importantly frequent flyer credit cards users must be interested in travel and want to earn travel rewards.
I myself am a regular flyer and big spender on my credit card, I have the Qantas Ultimate American Express. I earn 1.5 points for every dollar spent with no points capping. This leads to free business class flights even to Europe. Therefore this more than covers the huge $450 annual fee charged on the card.
Planning is key before you make your decision on whether a frequent flyer card is right for you and if so, then which one to get. Firstly work out the total amount you will spend on the card in a year. Look at the rewards, "flights", that you can achieve from this spend. Which works out better? While doing this exercise also look at the other key features of the credit card. What is the annual fee? Take the annual fee amount off any benefits you get from points. Most frequent flyer credit cards offer special benefits e.g. a free flight each year. If this is useful then add this benefit in dollar terms. This way you should really be able to see what card is best for your needs..
