What’s that fee for?

August 11, 2009

When you check your bank or credit card statement (you do always check your statements, don’t you?) sometimes you’ll find a fee has been charged to your account that you just don’t understand. According to the Australian Bankers Association, you have the right to an explanation.

When a fee is charged to your account, the bank is required to list all applicable information, such as the amount of the fee, the reason it was charged, and the date of issuance. If after reading the statement, you don’t understand why the fee is being charged or don’t believe it to be justified, you should look for an answer.

The Australian Bankers Association states that you should have three sources for this information. When you open an account with a bank, any applicable fees must be listed in the terms and conditions that are among the documents you sign. They should also be listed on the bank’s website, often as a downloadable document, or you can get an explanation by calling the bank.
