ATM error gives Commonwealth customers surprise windfall
September 22, 2009
When the ATM machine at the Campbelltown branch of Commonwealth bank began dispensing $50 notes instead of $20 ones last Monday, word spread quickly. Some customers doubled back and made multiple withdrawals, taking advantage of the error which gave them as much as 150% per withdrawal, before the error was noted and corrected on Tuesday.
Now Commonwealth is asking those customers to return their ill-gotten gain, reminding them of the video camera that records each transaction for safety and banking records indicating precisely who withdrew funds from that ATM during the period in question.
In short, they know who you are.
Although one source claimed the amount of money lost by the bank was around $48,000, a Commonwealth representative stated it was closer to $20,000, adding that more than 75% of the money has already been returned.
The error was caused by a manager loading the ATM canisters incorrectly. Retraining is already scheduled, of course.
