Credit Card Fraud with Vic Taxis
February 8, 2010
The Victorian Taxi Directorate is determined to remove dodgy drivers from taxi stands. A two-week operation has been launched to ensure that all taxi drivers process their customers’ credit card payments through a properly functioning EFTPOS terminal, rather than manually, as required by law.
“Credit card fraud is a common complaint received,” said Public Transport Minister Martin Pakula. “We are determined to get rid of the rogue drivers who do the wrong thing.”
Processing credit card payments through EFTPOS terminals protects the cardholder’s personal data and also does a better job limiting fraud. Both dockets and manual card receipts can be altered after customers sign them. Taxi drivers without a functioning EFTPOS terminal in their vehicles will be fined $292 for the slip, although the final goal of the operation is to force them off the roads or even press criminal charges against those suspected to be guilty of fraud.
Minister Pakula requested taxi passengers assist in the crackdown.
“Passengers can help us by being vigilant and reporting any incidences where you suspect credit card fraud may have occurred, especially where paper vouchers have been used to process fares,” he said. “Check your credit card statement and report possible fraud to your financial institution and the Victorian Taxi Directorate.”
Although he promised that all complaints would be investigated, Mr. Pakula emphasized the importance of providing the VTD with the appropriate information.
“One third of complaints we receive cannot be substantiated, so when lodging a complaint include as much information as possible,” he said. “It is important to always get a receipt, the taxi number, time and date of the trip, and pick up and drop off locations so we can track down the driver involved.”
