Queensland Premier seeks help for flood victims

March 8, 2010

Premier Anna Bligh is seeking financial assistance for the victims of flooding in Queensland’s southwestern area, including Murweh, Maranoa, and Balonne Shires, which have been declared disaster areas. To set the example, the state’s government made the first donation, of $500,000.

“I’ve seen first-hand the devastation the flooding over the past week has brought to these communities,” Ms. Bligh said, “and it’s going to take some time before the residents of towns like Charleville and Roma are back on their feet.”

With the Balonne River continuing to rise, thousands of people have been left homeless and several communities have been isolated in the widespread flooding. St. George residents have moved to higher ground and flood gauges are under water.

“We are all saddened by the devastation, suffering, and hardship caused throughout flood-affected southwest Queensland,” said Ms. Bligh. “The appeal is a tangible way of giving much-needed assistance.”

Donations as small as $2.00 will be tax deductible, and the Queensland government assures potential donors that “every dollar will go directly toward helping the victims of these devastating floods.”

Donations can be made in several ways:

•    In person at any of the major banks, including NAB, ANZ, Suncorp, Westpac, the Bank of Queensland, and the Commonwealth Bank. Cheques should be made payable to “Premiers’ Disaster Relief Appeal.”

•    Via credit card, either through the Queensland government’s website or toll-free at 1800 173 349. Both will be available 24/7.

For those affected by the flooding, financial assistance may already be available. For information, ring The Department of Communities on 1800 173 349.

“Any assistance we can provide is important,” said Ms. Bligh.
