Despite the Greek debt crisis roiling international financial markets, Australia’s rising inflationary pressures keeps the possibility of a May Reserve Bank rate increase a strong possibility.

Consumer prices in the first quarter of 2010 rose 0.9%, above economists’ forecasts of 0.6% to 0.8%. A report recently released by Access Economics forecasts the resource states will once again hit top gear and widen their economic gap with the rest of Australia.

The Access report forecasts that the commodities boom will drive Queensland and Western Australia with growth rates of close to 3.0% in the 2009–2010 financial year, the fastest of all the states.
