Credit Card Profile: American Express Business Credit Card

May 10, 2010

Last week we looked at the Qantas American Express Business credit card. But what if you want more business credit card options? What if you’re not interested in the Qantas credit card’s high $299 annual fee for example? That’s where the standard and gold American Express Business credit cards come in.

You can learn more about the American Express Business credit cards below to find out if they’re a better fit for your business.

Type of Credit Card: Business credit card, Rewards card

Interest Rates*:
As American Express business charge cards, there is no interest rate on your purchases. Instead you get the perk of having no pre-set spending limit, but you’re expected to pay off what you charge in full each month. Unlike typical credit cards with credit limits, your charges will be approved or denied on an individual basis based on your credit history and payment history. The cards do offer up to 51 credit free days.

Annual Fee*: The annual fee for the American Express Gold Business Card is $169. If you want to add additional employees to the account with their own cards to make purchases on behalf of your company, there is a $119 annual fee for each extra card-holder. The fees are $109 and $79 respectively for the standard version of the American Express Business credit card.

Rewards / Extras*:
You can choose between two different rewards programmes tied to your business credit card — the Choices programme or the Ascent rewards programme. The first has a $40 annual membership fee, and the Ascent rewards programme has an $80 annual fee.

If you go with the Gold Card option, you’ll also receive free domestic and overseas travel cover and travel inconvenience cover for your business trips.

Additional Details: You must personally earn at least $24,000 per year to be eligible for either of these American Express Business credit cards. You also must commit to a 12 month trading period for the card you choose.

Both cards provide monthly statements that include a GST breakdown meeting ATO requirements for GST reporting, and your annual fee for these cards is tax deductible!
