Do You Really Need a Business Rewards Card?

October 7, 2011

If you run a small business, you have multiple financing options available to you — from business credit cards to vendor lines of credit. Business rewards cards, like the CitiBusiness credit card, have an obvious appeal. You get something back when you spend money growing your business — money you plan to spend anyway.

Does that mean business rewards cards are always a good idea for business owners like you? Of course not. To help you figure out whether or not you really need a rewards card for your business, let’s take a look at both sides of the issue.

A Business Rewards Card Makes Sense When…

  1. You frequently travel for business and could use the frequent flyer points or other travel rewards.
  2. You often take clients out and the free concierge services and other perks would come in handy for these meetings over dinner or lunch.
  3. You need a lot of flexibility in how you can use your business credit, from local in-store purchases to online orders.
  4. You don’t need a lot of time to pay off purchases, so you’d like to be able to use interest free days to avoid paying interest on business purchases.

A Business Rewards Card Isn’t Your Best Bet If…

  1. You want to pay off large purchases over an extended period of time (as regular rewards card purchase rates can be higher than no frills options).
  2. You aren’t likely to use the rewards you earn, such as frequent flyer points. There is no point in paying a higher annual fee for a rewards card if you won’t take advantage of the rewards.
  3. You have adequate financing through other means (such as a debit card tied to a business loan account) which already gives you convenience and access to the cash you need.

Business rewards cards make a lot of sense for many business owners. But for others, they’re an unnecessary cost. Remember that you have other options available — no frills credit cards, business loans, and credit directly from your most common vendors. It’s up to you to choose the best financing tools for your own small business.
