3 Simple Changes to Use Credit Cards More Efficiently
December 16, 2011
Whether you use a single credit card or several of them, there’s no doubt they can be occasionally time consuming. You might have to remember the available balance on each card so you can pick the right one for each transaction. You have to wait on hold before paying a bill with a credit or debit card over the phone. Or maybe you feel like you spend too much time going over your statements every month.
If you’d like to make credit card use a little more efficient, consider these three ideas:
1. Set up automatic payments.
There are two ways automatic payments can help you save time when it comes to using credit cards. First, you can set up automatic payments for regular services or bills that accept your card. No more manual payments to multiple companies each month.
You can also use automatic payments to pay your credit card bill each month. Contact your credit card company to have funds automatically taken from your bank account (the minimum amount due, your full balance, or a set monthly payment depending on your preferences).
2. Sign up for paperless billing.
Make your credit card related recordkeeping more efficient by signing up for paperless billing. Instead of sending you a paper statement each month, you’ll get access to your credit card statements online. You can check them whenever you want without trying to remember where you put your statement. You can pay your bill quickly from the website in most, if not all, cases. And you don’t have to worry about organizing, storing, and sorting through paper files.
3. Give each credit card a purpose.
If you use several different credit cards, consider giving each a purpose. For example, you might have one card for emergencies which you leave at home. You might have a rewards card like the Citibank Rewards Classic card that you use for everyday spending (which you pay off in full each month). And you might have a low interest card that you use for big purchases you want to pay off over time.
When you’re going shopping, only take the card you plan to use. Not only do you save time by not having to dig out the right card each time, but it simplifies recordkeeping by having certain spending categories covered by different statements.
